Vestal Street Observatory & Astronomer’s Study

Join the Maria Mitchell Association for a rare and memorable evening of stargazing, history, and celebration at the iconic Vestal Street Observatory, a proud member of the Alliance for Historic Observatories.

The evening will begin with cocktails and conversation featuring Sam Hale, grandson of George Ellery Hale founder of the Mount Wilson Observatory. Sam spent more than five decades in the investment management industry before dedicating himself to advancing the mission and future of the observatory his grandfather began in 1904.

As night falls, guests will be welcomed into the historic observatory dome for guided stargazing—offering the only public opportunity this summer to experience the night sky through the telescopes of the Vestal Street Observatory.

This intimate gathering promises a truly unforgettable connection to Nantucket’s scientific heritage, the enduring spirit of discovery, and the wonder of the stars above.
